Selecting clothing for casual outdoor portraits

As many of you are scheduling outdoor portraits this time of year, we thought it would be helpful to give you some tips for selecting clothing.

Many of the guidelines for selecting clothing for studio portraits apply to outdoor portraits. For instance, solid clothing is still going to be best because we don't want clothing to draw attention away from the faces in the portrait.

Everyone should dress like they are going to the same event. Choosing similar colors and styles for each person gives a family portrait a unified look. Casual clothing works well in outdoor portraits. Jeans or khakis and white shirts, or white dresses are good choices. That being said, there are certainly other options. Color can be great, especially if everyone sticks to a similar tonal range and clothing style.

The portrait below is a great example of a casual outdoor portrait.
